Researchers investigating bird movements and populations use colored bands and flags to give individual birds an identity and to make them visible to people who watch birds. You can help these researchers by taking good notes on any color banded birds you see. These notes should include the species of bird, color and order of the bands on each leg and where the bird was seen. For example Piping Plover: right leg red over blue, le...

Welcome to my gallery. I am an artist who travels in the southwestern USA, and many of my paintings are from the lovely places we visit. My love is oil painting, and I do this in our RV motor home that we live and travel in. We have been traveling and going to different parts of the southwest for 22 years where I spend much time just observing nature. I hope that you will enjoy my photos and paintings. Please share my work with others. I have a deep passion for capturing images of birds in their natural environmental settings. Thanks Sue. I believe they are on the endangered list. That is why I got so excited and reported the banded birds I found.

Love this capture with the reflection, Roena! I've never seen this bird before.

Piping Plover has now been identified: Hi Roena, Thanks so much for the report and the photos! The PIPL in the last photo has a green flag (band with tab sticking out) on the upper left leg. This signifies that it was banded by Virginia Tech. The PIPL that you observed was banded as an adult on Lewis and Clark Lake, near Yankton SD during the summer of 2010 and back to Lewis and Clark Lake to breed in 2011 as well. Thanks again and please let me know if you have any other questions. Kelsi Hunt
