ABOUT ME John Labatt Scatcherd, born in Calgary AB 1967, and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Growing up in the Hawaiian Islands he found his love for the ocean, being outdoors, surfing, fishing and hiking. He spent summer vacations with his family in Grand Bend. John’s love of photography started when a friend showed him how to develop film in a dark room where he watched the paper come to life. The skies light up like nowhere else in the world. What began as a hobby has turned to a full blown business for John Labatt Scatcherd. It was 30 years ago that the Grand Bend man got his first camera. “You needed film in those days,” he quips adding there was “no delete button so you had to be aware of what you were shooting.” Scatcherd says he was fascinated to see the dark room process as his photos came alive. As life got busy the camera went on a shelf until he began taking sunset photos from the shoreline of his Grand Bend home. A few years ago when he worked at a beach restaurant near the shore and was able to take sunset photos at the end of his shift and even with his cell phone, the pics were amazing. "A year or two before my dad died he asked me what I wanted for Christmas. He energized me in my love of photography so I knew a camera was my answer." Scatcherd said photography is his escape.
