The Great Egret (Ardea alba) is a large, slender, long-necked white heron with a straight, pointed yellow bill, and black feet and legs. It is widespread and common mostly in coastal areas, but also inland near water. It measures about 39 inches in length and 1.9 pounds in weight. It forages in shallow water while wading, or on land while advancing slowly.

This beautiful adult Great Egret in breeding plumage hunting in shallow water was photographed at the Hammonasset Beach State Park, in Madison, Connecticut on 4-22-2017. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikkor 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/1600 sec, f/6.3. ISO 500.
