In January 2007, the Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas held a major solo exhibit of over 80 of my original watercolors. As part of the offerings, I created a "booklet" of narratives, a brief summation of each of the paintings, to be viewed if desired in the gallery. This couple joined the crowded center for the opening reception. Later in the week, I dropped by and witnessed this image, a remarkable reward for all our efforts. They came, pulled up two chairs, took a booklet each, and proceeded to position themselves in front of all the paintings as they read the narratives...learning and appreciating the paintings...far beyond the veneer of a passing glance. I shall always remember this with unending gratitude.

In 1969, Monte Toon began his career as a watercolorist. He credits the late Charles Sanderson of Wichita, Kansas, with setting him on his life-long path of watercolor painting. Sanderson inspired new approaches and techniques. Later, the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper would influence Toon's work. More than 54 years experience has defined Toon's style in his exclusive use of watercolor. In 1991, a turning point occurred in Toon's work. Travels in Canada, New England and the east coast broadened his range of subject matter.
