￿Buffalo Hunt￿ hit a deep emotion in which the paint had to do much more than reveal a careful study of photographic symmetry or realism. I wanted to sense fear in the horses as well as in the buffalo, while examining each individual part in the turmoil of this terminal moment. Each element of the painting has many facets.
To appreciate a painting like this, one must be able to sense a tragic tenderness amidst the commotion. I found myself painting from the roots of family heritage, anticipating the herd instincts of the buffalo, and also manifesting the precision the hunter-gatherer Native American spirit exhibited.
