This winter watercolor painting was commissioned by my client who owns a buffalo ranch. He sent me several photos that he had taken throughout the year of his buffalo herd in the woods. I had many photo references to work from in order to compose this painting. The bull in the foreground was based on a magnificent photo by Donna Kennedy (with her permission) called EYE OF THE BUFFALO. I decided to depict the herd and evergreens with freshly fallen caked-on snow using blues and violet tones in the shadows and rose and yellow tones in the low morning sunlight.
