Description
The story of the Cape Arago light, attests to the ferocious tides, strong winds and rocky coastline found on this part of the Oregon Coast. Third time's a charm! In 1866, the first lighthouse was erected to guide busy marine traffic into Coos bay. In 1906, this lighthouse succumbed to the erosion...another lighthouse took it's place. This lighthouse was built a little further back, but it only lasted short of 30 years. Completed in 1934, the third and existing lighthouse was built. Even further back and built of reinforced concrete, complete with keepers quarters, fog signal building and power house. This station was connected to the mainland by a steel personnel bridge. Now automated, the lighthouse can be seen from a distance, but is not open to the public. It is serviced by the USCG. The facility is about 2 miles South of Charleston, which is west of Coos Bay and Highway 101.
