The sky is a book to be read. The individual clouds are the words. There are many different words in this vocabulary but once you learn them, you can read the weather. The words can be assembled in countless different ways to reflect what the atmosphere is actually doing.

In this case, the vital key was the stable layer high in the atmosphere. This was not a subsidence inversion - stable layer since there is a lot of moisture. A frontal inversion is the likely cause of these altocumulus gravity wave clouds high in the atmosphere. Given the moisture and cloud in the atmosphere, a warm frontal surface was the likely signature and the thin veil of cirrus higher in the atmosphere was the warm conveyor belt of the approaching system.

The southwesterly winds channeling northeastward down the St Lawrence revealed that the surface ridge had passed to the east. This was also indicative that the likely nature of the stable frontal inversion had to be a warm front.
