Dangling bond. Molecular graphic of a dangling bond associated with an oxygen defect in silicon dioxide. Coloured spheres represent different atoms: oxygen = red, silicon = yellow. The green shapes are molecular orbitals. Dangling bonds are molecular orbitals that would like to chemically interact with another species to form a chemical bond.
