The Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl with a wide distribution over the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. It measures about 8.5 inches in length and weighs about 6 ounces. It is strongly streaked and barred, has ear tufts, and has a pale greenish bill. There are three color morphs, Red, Brown and Gray, that represent a continuous spectrum of variation. They are found in a variety of wooded areas and are nocturnal, but thankfully may be seen during the day while roosting in a tree hole. They hunt for rodents and insects from their perch.

This portrait photograph of an Eastern Screech-Owl was taken at Croton Point Park in Croton, New York on 3-20-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR telephoto lens to capture this image.
