Description
German Mirak rocket and launch stand, 1929. The Mirak rockets were one of the early designs built by the German Verein fur Raumschiffahrt (VfR, Spaceflight Society). The VfR, which was active from 1927 to 1933, carried out pioneering work that laid the foundations for space flight. The VfR also worked to promote space travel to the public, and this rocket was intended to be launched at the premiere of the film Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon, 1929), directed by Fritz Lang. Although the launch failed, the launch stand was later modified by the VfR and used for other, successful launches.
