Description
Heinrich Rohrer (1933-2013), Swiss physicist, adjusting a sample in the chamber of the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) he invented with Gerd Binnig at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Switzerland. Rohrer studied at ETH Zurich under Pauli, gaining his doctorate in 1960. In 1963 he joined IBM, where his research interests included phase transitions, critical phenomena and nanomechanics. The STM he and Binnig invented is able to obtain very high magnifications, even visualising individual atoms. Rohrer and Binnig were awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
