The I'iwi (Drepanis coccinea) is a Hawaiian honeycreeper endemic to the islands of Maui, Hauai and Hawaii, found in forests at high elevations. It is a member of the Family Fringillidae, the Finch family. It's plumage is scarlet overall, with black wings, and a long curved bill that is salmon-colored. Their preferred food is the nectar of the flowers of ohi'a lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees, and insects. While their population has been estimated to total about 350,000, it has been decreasing. The I'iwi is listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act, being rare on O'ahu and Molokai, and extinct on Lanai, due to loss of habitat with increasing development. I'iwi are very susceptible to Avian Malaria, and survive at higher altitudes that are too cool for mosquitoes. The I'iwi is important in Hawaiian folklore, and is also a recognizable symbol of Hawaii.
