Description
FEATURED ON THE HOMEPAGE OF FINE ART AMERICA
This restored slide film photograph features an iconic street scene in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the mid-Fifties (most likely 1956). It includes a business address of 699 Jackson Street as well as an Italian business name, placing this landmark neighborhood where Chinatown borders what became known as Italian town in the city of San Francisco.
I wanted to leave this image basically as-shot, so I did not sweep the street. It includes several cars I remember from that era: a Cadillac sedan and possibly a red Alfa Romeo cabriolet among them. (That model car is especially interesting, for I found one online that had sold at auction for $4.4M.)
People are included in this busy street scene but are not identifiable. The sky is as-shot, with streaks that could be clouds or low-lying fog. Also available in color and black-and-white sepia tint. This is one of many images I shot as a kid. Though I got into a bit of trouble for stepping into the street, processing this memory to bring it back to life made it all worthwhile.
