Plumbago, also known as Cape Plumbago or Sky flower, is one of the most popular small flowering shrubs in Florida. This plant native of South Africa produces attractive blue flowers during most of the year and can often be seen covering the embankments of overpasses around central Florida. The name Plumbago comes from a Latin word meaning lead. This plant was once used to treat lead poisoning.
The plant: Plumbago is an evergreen shrub with multiple trunks that grows about 6 to 10 feet high and a spread of 6 to 10 feet. It often grows only 2 to 3 feet under most landscape conditions. Stems are long and arching, the new growth is green, becoming woody with age. Leaves are simple, alternate, sometimes spirally arranged, about 2 inches long, softly pubescent and with a tiny claw at the tip of the leaf.
