Looks fantastic hung on my blue accent wall, and is much admired by my friends. I wish the size I purchased was still available because one of my friends really wants to purchase this picture with the same cooper frame choice.

Artist's Description
The were at least a dozen night hawks feeding in the Singleton sunset sky. Night hawks are members of the nightjar family which helps to explain the title. They are described as being medium-sized nocturnal or crepuscular birds in the family Caprimulgidae and order Caprimulgiformes, characterised by long wings, short legs, and very short bills. Being insect eaters, these birds are very susceptible to pesticides. Common nighthawks breed in North America but migrate in the fall up to 10,000 kilometres south to the Amazon and Cerrado biomes of South America. The birds make numerous stops along their journey. As a result, pesticides and loss of habitat anywhere along this very long migration is an important factor in their survival.
The common nighthawk is one of the most widely distributed birds in the Western Hemisphere, but also one of the most poorly understood due to its nocturnal nature. It is not a hawk but a member of the "nightjar" family which is a group of nocturnal bird...
About Phil Chadwick
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. I too watched Nighthawks every year since a child...they and Chimney Swifts - most interesting birds. And we, as well, are seeing their numbers drop...in the 1950's they were incredibly common...now rarely get to observe these any more...the insect apocalypse described a couple years back is also true here in farm country. Its affecting everything from the top on down...I lose sleep over all I see...
Phil Chadwick replied:
I agree Bruce. I kept honey bees until I could no longer keep them alive. “Insectageddon” is manmade with monocultures replacing diverse landscapes. Climate climate contributes to specie loss too. The “silent spring” forecast by Rachel Carson in the 1960s when widespread pesticide use was killing millions of songbirds has spread to quiet summer and fall as well. Chemicals that have been banned elsewhere are still allowed in Canada... follow the money and you will understand why. I wrote about it in https://bulletin.cmos.ca/making-the-weather/ but really all I can do is protect our own small property. I lose sleep as well my friend.

Great compostion and lovely colors...wonderful description and thanks for teaching, along with creating such beautiful work! L/F
Phil Chadwick replied:
I watch the birds and nature as a whole very carefully at Singleton. Their activities reveal much about the health of the environment. On the whole, bird numbers have dropped dramatically - especially those of migrating species. Ducks are way down in numbers... sad. Thank you for your ongoing encouragement Sunny! I will paint on.
