Artist's Description
This artwork is devoid of images, instead entirely covered in vibrant blues, slate grays, and purple-brown rusts. Rothko's layering of these colors creates an "inner light," a transient luminosity that makes the color blocks seem to float beyond the canvas.
Rothko's paintings are more focused on creating a sense of space rather than relying solely on dramatic colors. "Rust and Blue" contains multiple layers of oils, enhancing the luminous effect in key areas of the composition. Despite its departure from traditional art, some scholars draw parallels with Titian's work, particularly his 1514 painting "Noli me tangere," which also employed a similar technique of layered paint for a rich finish.
