Can you imagine sailing the open seas on a schooner? Imagine navigating by the stars or the sun, letting the winds fill those sails and take you on a new adventure? A chance to explore?
Those thoughts filled my mind as I watched the schooner Bluenose II sail past Peggy's Cove Lighthouse in the waters of St. Margaret's Bay as part of Operation Bluenose, a virtual vigil to lift the spirits of Nova Scotians during a particularly trying year.
An exact replica of the famous racing schooner featured on the Canadian dime, she is a goodwill ambassador for Nova Scotia and Canada. The original Bluenose struck a reef and sank in 1946 in the Caribbean. The Bluenose II was built in 1963 by many of the same people who built the original ship. Her home port is the UNESCO World Heritage town of Lunenburg, located on the south shore...
