"Backpackers from all over the world tour South America. They often go to Bolivia to see the Salaar - the huge famous salt lake near the town of Uyuni. Travelling south towards Chile, and over the high altitude Andes, one passes through barren countryside part of which is known as the Salvador Dali desert as nearby are the Salvador Dali rock formations. This really is in the middle of nowhere as the painting indicates. Vast and desolate apart from the permanent tyre tracks of the jeeps hauling the backpackers."
