Description
From an historical perspective this painting has a very unique quality. It shows the famous Grecourt Gates at Smith College, In their original location. At some point in the next 40 years the college moved the gates to their current location, which is more prominent, in that you can now see the Gates from the Main Street of the Northampton shopping district. Where they are located now, the Gates are a symbol of an entrance to the college; but, in their current location, one can only pass through them on foot.
This painting shows where they originally were as a functional entrance to the college with a narrow road passing through the gates. In the background, you can see several churches that still are located on this side road right next to the college campus. The Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish figures most prominently, in this painting.

Irina, Thank you! Glad you like my Mom's artistry, of so long ago. She was in her early twenties, when she painted this one.

Jeri Borst replied:
RC, Thank you for the feature of the watercolor showing the Grécourt Gates, at Smith College in their original location, around 70 years ago. The painting was done while Jeri Borst was a student at Smith College; she graduated, with a BFA, in 1947. In 2007 when I took Jeri, back to Smith for her 60th reunion, the promenade of the classes happened to gather for the march, right at about the same spot where the Gates had been, as shown in the painting. Personally, I was kind of disoriented to be there, and not see the Gates. Having seen the painting, so many times over many years of growing up, I was accustomed to that place. But also a custom to the Gates being there. But actually my understanding of reality was based on a painting, a place that my Mom had seen and painted, a little more than 60 years earlier.😄 -Jeri's daughter
