The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large owl with a wingspan of about 52 inches and a weight of about 4 pounds. They typically breed in the Arctic and Taiga but have been venturing further south in winter to the northern United States. Snowy Owls are found on barrier beaches, airport fields, marshes and farmlands, and feed on rodents, small animals, ducks, and gulls. The first-year males and females have dense bars on their chest, while the adult females have lighter bars, and the adult males are essentially all white. They are mainly nocturnal but have also been seen hunting during the day as I have observed at Jones Beach.

This Snowy Owl standing and roosting on a sand dune in morning light was photographed at the Jones Beach State Park, in Wantagh, New York on 1-13-2014.
