These images of Survivor Spirits exist in the golden light of their glowing inner strength as beacons of hope and examples of endurance to us all. The progeny of African slaves can be proud to be the red-blooded proof that the slaves were able to survive against all attempts to annihilate them, overtly through lynching, starvation, beatings, separation from family, friends and home. Or accidentally during the transatlantic journey, disease, suicide, etc.
The fact that any slaves lived to build an economic base for this country, getting no pay for their labors, is miraculous!

I hope you see my sense of pride and their self-determination in their eyes.

Joyce Owens Biography Owens recently was commissioned by the landmark Blackstone Hotel in Chicago. She was commissioned by two patrons for "Not Just nother Pretty Face" at the Hyde Park Art Center in 2017. She has exhibited her work in Turin, Italy and has been included in the Arts In Embassies Program in Stockholm, Sweden, Mbabane, Swaziland, NATO, in Brussels, Belgium, Monrovia, Liberia and Guyana. The traveling exhibition, "Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare: As They Like It" opened Oct. 1, 2016 at the Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Ave. in Chicago, IL., and has been presented at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago, Carthage College in Wisconsin and Bowling Green University in Ohio.
