Description
Tycho's great brass globe. Historical artwork of Tycho Brahe's (1546-1601) great brass globe. Brahe was a Danish astronomer. This celestial globe was one of the instruments at his observatory at Uraniborg, on the island of Hven. The globe showed the positions of the stars and constellations with great accuracy. It was made of wood, covered with brass and carefully packed with parchment to be exactly spherical. It was left to weather for several seasons in order to ensure it would not change shape after calibration. The construction process took a total of 25 years. Illustration from Tycho's Astronomiae Instauratae Mechanica (1598). Extract from Weltall und Menscheit (Universe and Humanity), by Hans Kraemer (ca. 1880).
