Description
Water pump. 16th-century illustration of men operating a pump being used to remove flood water from behind a wall and discharge it into the sea or a river. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (1531-c.1610). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells. This is an example of a rotary pump.
