Description
By all means, the "turtle boats" of Korea back in the XV-XVIth centuries were by all practical matters, the first "ironclads". They are first mentioned from the time of King Taejong (1400-1418), but remained in the prototype stage. It was not until the Ijmin war in 1592 that an Admiral took up the idea of such ship and ordered construction. Three would be launched in 1592 and two others in 1595, adding their decisive weight in the battle alongside Korean Panokson ships in large majority. Their action can be compared with that of the handful of Venetian Galleasses at the battle of Lepanto.
